Happy Canadian Thanksgiving to Everyone

Happy Thanksgiving to one and all!  This is part of a silk piece of fabric art that was a wedding gift to our niece.

I thought the fall scene, with the geese was appropriate, even though we are not having geese for Thanksgiving dinner.  Ham and Turkey this year, with lots of family and friends around the dinner table.

Shere Kahn

I have always loved the big cats and wolves.  I made my wolf picture a couple of years ago, and now here is my tiger.

This piece is dedicated to the memory of Shere Kahn, a large male Bengal tiger who recently passed away at the Big Cat Rescue just outside of Tampa Florida.  I'll be updating my 2014 gallery with more information about him in the next few days.

I MUST BE INSANE!!

I spend some time with my grandsons on Sunday and dragged them into a quilt shop with promises of a quilt each.  Devon has chosen a black and white rag quilt and Ryan wants a tartan quilt.  He has chosen the PEI tartan and it will have a lovely flannel backing.

I've worked it out, and to get all of my projects done between now and November, and then Christmas, I will have to work on projects at least 4 hours every day.  And then there is my gardening.  And curling.  And working at ArtScene Spencerville.  And oh! yes - spend time with my husband.  Perhaps I should give up sleeping..

Shirkan

For those of you who also follow my work on Facebook, you know about Shirkan - the tiger from the Jungle Book.  I've always been a fan of Kipling, and when I saw this wonderful tiger on a fabric panel, I decided to make him. It has proven more difficult than expected, but I have now designed the piece and have done a trial layout.

It will have a great deal of green - as it is a jungle piece, and Shirkan's face will be peaking out through some palm fronds.

I'm really looking forward to working on him.

Scarlett Elegance

"Scarlett Elegance"
(24" x 24")

$350

I was telling a friend of mine about this piece, and went to the blog to show it to her, only to find that I had forgotten to post it.
I started this piece in 2011, and cut it out, before I decided on the background.  I tried several fabrics and colours, and finally had to back off to a plain black fabric with a  thin ribbon border in gold and black.
The background fabric has been brushed and rubbed so that the fabric appears to be velvet instead of cotton.  This gives it a depth that you would not get from regular cotton.

Tiger, Tiger, Burning Bright

I love the big cats, and tigers are one of my favourites. They look so gentle and are in reality so dangerous...especially when taking care of their young.

Here is a photograph of a tiger that is very similar to a panel I just purchased featuring a tiger.  Look forward to seeing a new creation called "Shirkan" by the end of the year.  I would love to say by the end of the summer, but that's not going to happen.

Coming This Summer

Life has just been so busyIt seems that I am more in the mood to quilt these days,  so I have been designing door quilts.  They will hang in ArtScene Spencerville, and as I finish them, I will be sure to take pictures, and post them on the blog.  They aren't large -about 27" x 60" and hang on magnets on steel doors.

The next ones to watch out for will be entitled "Roses of Summer" and will be pastels in a dark border.  I don't have it all designed yet, but it should be interesting.

Our feature exhibit, for the month of June at ArtScene Spencerville is entitled "The Art of Flowers", and will be a group exhibit.  Please come and visit us during the month to see some wonderful new work by our artists.

Our Grand Re-Opening Was A Fantasic Success!!!!

We had our grand re-opening on Saturday, April 5th and everything went off without a hitch.  Our MP, Gord Brown joined us, and our MPP, Steve Clark, was with us in spirit.

ArtScene received well wishes from both, as well as an artistic achievement award from the Friends of the Spencerville Public Library.  The media and radio coverage was spectacular, and we had lots of coverage from all the local newspapers and radio stations, as well as some television coverage.  All in all, a great day.  The video coverage can be seen on the Eastern Ontario Network and the link is on my Facebook page. Here are a couple of pictures, of the speakers, and my work in the background, along with two of Christopher Fawcett's photographs.

January Is Bringing Lots of Changes

January has certainly brought changes to ArtScene Spencerville!!

For those of you who are not aware, ArtScene is a cooperative art gallery located in Spencerville, Ontario.  The building was purchased in November 2013, and major renovations started in early January.  We are now at the painting stage, and the amount of work already done, and still to be done is daunting.

We hope to re-open by February 14th, yeah! Happy Valentine's Day!!
Our opening exhibit is entitled "Art From the Heart" celebrating love, family and well being until the end of March 2014.

And in April, I will be the feature artist, and the exhibit will be entitled "Wonders of the Orient".  There will also be some coordinating photographs of Japan by Christopher Fawcett.  More on this as we get closer to the event.

If you are an artist and would like to display your work in a fabulous gallery, and work with amazing artists, drop me a line, I'd love to hear from you.  ArtScene is a wonderful organization.
